Going to Navarettes is such a treat for me! I don't get home much and now it will be even less as my mom is moving soon. I started eating at Navarettes way back in the 70s. It used to be one one end of Economy Market. Then it moved to a windowless building and has been in its current location for at least 20 years. The quality of the food has never changed. The recipes are still the same, the quality ingredients are the same and the taste is better than ever! If you can't tell, I love this place. We donated Hispanic artwork to the restaurant many, many years ago and they are still proudly hanging it on their wall. It's almost like coming home. The burritos are stuffed with beef, beans and/or rice. I always get the same thing; beef burrito with chili gravy, lettuce, onion and sour cream. Today I ate the whole burrito plus nachos. I don't even know what chili gravy is but it's delicious! This restaurant never skimps on portions. For $3.95 you get a huge stuffed burrito with cheese. Everything else is a little extra (70 cents for a bowl of chili gravy) but it's worth every penny! This is the one place I have to eat at when I am home. Now I guess I will just drive the 3 hours here, eat, nap and then drive 3 hours back. And yes, the food is that good!

Great prices and good food. Nothing fancy just good flavor and a good value for your money. Be sure to get the chili gravy.

Navarette's is a must whenever I'm home in Sioux City! The food is one-of-a-kind comfort food and unbelievably low in price. You can feed a booth of people here for the price of a chain restaurant's dinner for two. Friendly, quick service. Never have had a serious complaint in the 20-ish years I've eaten here. I recommend the beef corn entomatada, the enchilada, and a side of tortilla chips to dip in their signature hot sauce. You can buy a tub of the hot sauce to take home with you, which I plan to do the next chance I get!

First off, please take note that they do NOT accept credit cards here. I don't know why the Yelp page currently says otherwise, but unless something changes in the future, it's cash or check only. With that out of the way, if I hadn't grown up eating here, I'd probably be wary of trying a restaurant in this location, looking like it does. The exterior is rough around the edges, the tables are getting pretty old, and it's on the verge of deserving the title of a "hole in the wall." Looks aren't everything, though, and once you get settled in, the staff is friendly, the service is quick for a sit-down restaurant, and the food is piping hot and tasty. I love the melted cheese, the kick of the hot sauce, and the burst of flavor from the beef. This is also one of the most inexpensive restaurants I've ever seen. Even McDonald's will probably run you a higher bill than Navarrete's. You get a plenty generous helping, but admittedly most of the menu items are pretty simple: tortilla, cheese, a sauce, sometimes some onions, and a choice of ground beef, beans, rice, or a combination of the three for the main filling. The enchiladas and tamales have a thick chili gravy that's heavy on the cumin seasoning. (The burrito has the same sauce, but it comes dry by default, so you have to ask for the gravy.) The entomatadas come with plain tomato sauce instead, which makes for a much milder flavor. If you need to spruce it up a little, there's a decent assortment of add-ons you can order to customize it, like lettuce, tomato, sour cream, black olives, and jalapenos. Those add-ons cost a little extra, but you get a generous portion and the price remains very reasonable. The tacos and chalupas have no sauce, but instead come with lettuce and tomato along with the cheese and meat. Each table has a container of hot sauce, so if you like spicier foods, it's a great addition to your meal. I know people who eat it plain by the spoonful, but in my opinion the sauce doesn't have much flavor on its own, just a whole lot of heat. That makes it great for pouring over an entree, because it only adds a hot kick without risk of the flavors clashing. When it comes to dipping tortilla chips in the sauce, though, I prefer to ask for a side of tomato sauce to mix into the heat for a little extra taste. Is the food "authentic"? Well, this is not what most people think of when they get a craving for authentic Mexican food, no, but does it really matter? California rolls sure as heck aren't traditional sushi, but most sushi fans enjoy the new spin on the cuisine without complaining about the lack of authenticity. Navarrete's is different, but that's not a mark against it; they just made their own twist on the cuisine. You can come by traditional Mexican food elsewhere, both nearby and far away, but Navarrete's makes unique family recipes that you won't find outside of Sioux City. There's nothing else quite like it. Whenever I've been away for a long period of time, this is one of the first stops I have to make after I get home.

On entering this restaurant it feels like you warped to Mexico..not because of the cool atmosphere but because it's not been updated in at least 30 years. We sat there for awhile discussing updates we'd personally make! This was the only downfall though!! Our server was fast and very friendly. I decide to order what a precious yelper had mentioned and it was so good! If I was for food and service alone I'd give them 5 stars, but do to the lacking atmosphere they lose a star. Will be back!
